Frequently asked questions - public holidays

How many public holidays are there in 2026?

There are 18 in 2026: fourteen fixed dates and four tied to Orthodox Easter. How many of them land on a weekend is shown in the table above.

If a holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, is it moved?

The Labour Code provides no automatic transfer. Under article 30.2 an employee may ask for a different day off where the employment contract provides for it, and the government may declare additional holidays by decree.

Why does the Easter date change?

Orthodox Easter is computed on the Julian calendar and then converted to the Gregorian one. That is why it, and the three days tied to it, land on a different date every year.

Can people work on a public holiday?

Yes, but that work counts as overtime and is paid at an increased rate (Labour Code, articles 30.4 and 27).
